Yeah, thats what I thought, and why taking the relic blade with a shield seems like the most advantageous option.
The problem with the banner is that it says that the squad can upgrade one model to take a standard, but each model can individually be equipped with a relic blade. So on battlescribe, the banner is something you check for the entire squad, while you can also add wargear to each individual model.

Since the banner isn't a weapon, its assumed that the guy carries it around, then plants it in the ground to start fighting with his actual weapons. Dude holding a banner and a big fuck off sword in the other hand would just be a sitting duck otherwise!

Ok this one is super specific.... If a mawloc hits a chariot when it comes up, is it a shooting attack or a melee attack?

It's neither - so effects that only trigger during shooting or combat do not come into play. I'm sure it's FAQd somewhere, but RAW the chariot takes a S6 AP2 hit and the owner chooses if the rider or the chariot takes it.

Ok cool, so I get to choose unless it is specifically a melee attack. Do you get a cover save against the attack? I assumed no, but I couldn't pin that down for sure.
And yes Pablo, I am studying for tonight, despite its general ineffectiveness, mawlocs scare the shit out of me for some reason.
Upside for you is I am not bringing the harvest.

No cover, it explicitly says so in the Mawloc's "terror from the deep" rules. Also, I wouldn't call them generally ineffective - they are one of the most competitive units to bring in a tyranid list; most tournament lists include 3 flying hive tyrants, 3 mawlocs, some lictors to get the mawlocs where you want them, and then spore mines etc to play board control. Can be very brutal!

Can be very brutal! For sure. But I currently don't have lictors, so they are pretty inefficient. And with reanimation protocols or FNP, the mawloc probably won't kill everyone it lands on. It's been good in 1 of 2 games played so far (mishapped and died in the other game).

I can only speak from experience, which has seen them mishap and die turn 2 in two out of the three games I have faced one. Granted both players were only running one, which I understand to be sub-optimal

Question about Cult Ambush for the GSC. I've seen conflicting interpretations of this. If ambushing instead of infiltrating, would I roll and place the units during my deployment (as if infiltrating)? Or would they ambush on my first turn? If it's during deployment, can they move on the first turn?

Ok that's how I interpreted it but 1d4chan says raw: infiltrating models get to cult ambush instead, and cult ambush says you move on as reserves. I've been playing using your interpretation, but I saw that last night while looking at tactics. Cause 1d4chan suggested a null deploy if using all infiltrators. (Obviously not taking their word as authority, just wanted to see how people have been playing it.) Cause I'm also having trouble with cult ambush strategy if I'm going 2nd.

Only the first result actually says "move" the rest say "place" or "set up". But, again, since this specifically happens during Deployment, and they haven't yet had their 1st turn move phase, they get to move as usual. Think about it, when you infiltrate a unit, its not like they have to stand still for a turn - this is the same thing, its basically a special form of infiltrate and follows the normal rules there of, unless where Cult Ambush rules supersede them (ie, when you can charge/shoot etc).

Question about deathwatch transports: A bunch of the kill team formations include terminators (or vanguard or bikes), but still give the option for drop pods and rhinos. Is that right? I can put termis in a drop pod if they are in a kill team formation? For instance, malleus kill team, which is 5 vets and 1+ terminator. Otherwise, how the hell do they get around?
