You know Adepticon (and pretty much all tournaments these days) is running a 1500 Highlander tournament ( link for Daniel Young) that describes almost exactly what you're talking about? WHERE'S YOUR EXCUSE NOW

Deec. I'd still like to try "old skool" 40k, without Lords of War (or Knights). Also, personally, don't see the need to limit Troop choices... although it would make Tau players try Kroot for a change. Still wonder why people look at them and think mass wounds-on-4+ shooting is terrible. Must be all the dark eldar venoms being terrible at everything.
It gives me glee to see that some major events are at least offering this as an option - a part of me is just yearning for the simpler days. I think allies are fun, I think some of the formations are fun, and lord knows that the Tyranid codex is basically *just now* being finished... but a lot of things are just over the top, super complicated, and just awkward.
Like 3 Flyrants, 3 Mukes, and an Adamantine Lance formation. Because that obviously is forging a massive narrative.
PS - my excuse is Mike has yet to chug my D, and I feel grumpy because of it.

To be fair, I think this is a perfect example of "looks gross on paper, in reality very awkward to use and not actually flexible enough to win" in regards to the 3 flyrants, 3 mukes, 3 knight list.
He literally lost that game by as much as he could. Everything but one knight died, to a semi-balanced Iron Hands list. An iron hands list that, using some of the lists Jeff and I have built, could be handled relatively well - at least making it a game.
The game this guy played with his "filthy OMG so awesome WIN" list was just terrible - and he made all the right decisions. I think it comes down to knowing how to win the game and knowing that having only 6 units on the board (even with 18 HP on 3 of them), means you're very likely to get shot to death or bogged down in combat and rendered useless.
I'm interested to see what we'll see at Adep. I don't think we'll see many adamantium lance formations, if for no other reason than its financially and points inefficient, considering its not the kind of list that you get everyday use out of. Not a lot of armies are going to be able to stay competitive in terms of model count or offensive/defensive ability when you invest that many points into 3 models.
