I came to the Iron Hands Space Marines for their Dreadnoughts, cybernetics, and white-casing boltguns, but I stayed for the grav bikes and unreasonably good Feel No Pain bonuses. When I started putting this army together, my goals were to do a lot of conversions, use my airbrush as much as possible, and try techniques I'd seen commission painters use a lot, like oil washes and weathering. I dislike painting black, though, and some folks might've noticed I really like bright colors. Emerald green seemed like a fun color to paint, plus I could still use white as a spot color for dem bolter casings, so I've loosely based my paint scheme on the Sons of Medusa. I painted a test model that I'm happy with, though I'm still debating weathering and/or paint chipping on him. What do you think? Dirty Marines good or heresy?

Just my two cents, but I love what you have here!

I love that white, looks really slick man! And I think just the dust/grime on their feet is perfect for light weathering; sometimes you can go overboard, and it just looks like someone tried way too hard to get chips and weathering in there. That being said, give some paint chips a shot on one of them and just see how you like it - if you just do a couple its an easy touch up to remove them!

Finished a couple of other dudes in my first tactical squad! Somehow my quick paint scheme plan has had freehand icons added to it. I don't know when I decided to try that on every Marine, but it's fun to do, so I guess I'm running with it. I keep trying to use a white backdrop and my jerry-rigged lightbox, but I think I need real daylight bulbs for the colors to look correct. A hobby task for another day.

I did a shift in the colors for these guys, to bring in more color besides the white & black I was using. I settled on a trichromatic scheme of secondary colors, so Green, Purple, and Orange. I got the idea from the Ultramarine's scheme, which uses all primary colors. I thought I was being really clever, shifting the color wheel around, then I realized that the new Death Guard scheme is already all secondary colors... ah well, it must have been a good idea if someone already thought of it, right? I was unhappy with a few things on the first few dudes. The white, the armor overall, and the lack of a "pop" contrasting color. The color scheme change introduced orange, which addressed the last issue. For the armor, I had used a purple wash to shade the green--which I thought would look cool since they're opposed hues, but it ended up just looking confusing. So I went back and line shaded with a dark green, then used a green glaze to make the white-ish armor highlights more green-ish, and I'm pretty pleased with how it ended up. Finally, I changed my white recipe based on this guy's post of his Blood Angel successor chapter (he has some super clean models, see his Scythes of the Emperor test model!) and the brownish-white fit a lot better with my brownish metallics. With the Sgt and last Bolter guy done, and the first three reworked a bit, I'd like to finish a vehicle next. See how this scheme holds up on a larger model. Not sure if it'll be a Rhino, Dreadnought, or Drop Pod. What would you pick? (they look a lot dirtier in the photos, now I feel like I have to go back and fix some spots!)

Pretty much finished up my Thunderfire Cannon, which was probably the first model I assembled for this army. He's been re-worked to match the tricolors, though I had used a lot of purples on him already so I just left the plasma and tesla coil backpack rod that way. I finally threw some weathering powders on the cannon platform, and it was pretty fun! You can get really carried away easily, so I'll have to make some sort of plan when I take this approach to the other vehicles. I mixed the powders with either Lahmian Medium, ethanol, or just dabbed it on dry, and they all gave slightly different effects. I had black, steel-y metal, and orange rust pigments. I'll add freehands to these two later, probably when working on the next infantry squad. Yeah, I'll have to do a Dread next. I have two lightly converted AoBR models, one of which I've already basecoated, so he's next in queue.
Cheers!

Here's my first Dreadnought! Still need to finish his base and add static grass, but I wanted to share this guy. Made some minor conversions to the AoBR one. This particular model was traded to me for some second edition starter Orks (yeah, the mono-pose spiked helmet ones), if you can believe it, then served time as a Rifledread in Russell's Deathwing before returning to me and being repurposed for his current role. I gave him a flamer instead of a stormbolter, using a spare from the Centurion kit and some guitar wire; turned the Multi-melta into a twin Lascannon using the turret from a Razorback; and put some extenders on his exhaust pipes to get the silhouette more like the 'real' Dread kit and hopefully help him feel less self-conscious about his height. I'm quite pleased with how the color combination turned out. I gave the freehand cogs a try, and man was that a pain. I'll have to get an Ad Mech decal sheet or something to save me that trouble in the future. What do you think? What would you paint next? Vehicle? Infantry? Bikes? Character?

BIKES
Also get the forgeworld mechanicus tagmahta or iron hands decal sheets to save you the trouble - they're not only like 3x the size of the GW decal sheets but the detail and quality is far better, and you get a ton more variety. I will never go back after using the thousand sons decal sheet they sell - any army that needs decals, I'm going to FW.

Hot tip, Nick P. Those Taghmata ones look perfect for what I'm doing! Alright my bikes will be getting the airbrush treatment next. Ironically I found a black recipe I really like while painting the Dread, from the Black Templar this dude has been painting in the Tale of Four Warlords White Dwarf series. So I might end up doing lacquer black bikes with a green stripe. Get an old school Kawasaki Ninja look, maybe.

I spent a lot of time wrestling my airbrush to behave, and after a trip to Midwest Airbrush Supply and consuming far too many beginner articles I feel like I finally have a handle on it. I may start a post later to share what I learned about this fickle tool. I'm looking for a break from Slaanesh, and I figured cybernetic men on motorcycles was just the ticket. With the 8th ed changes these guys are a less than ideal choice, but I'm trying to make them work. The Sgt. had his combi-grav replaced with a power maul, which ended up looking like an electrified baseball bat, which I'm into (broke off in the pictures). I'm starting with a squad of 3x to screen for my Cpt/Techmarine on bike. I went a little crazy with the final zenithal highlight, almost white instead of green, but I think a green glaze at the end will knock it down to match the Tactical Marines. I'm back to trying the oil wash, learned a few things after my initial disappointment with it, and these shots are right after I applied it. I think I could go even darker in color, maybe mix black or pure black, so next batch I'll give that a shot. The mineral spirits need like 2 hrs to dry, which I did not know before. They'll get a matte coat once dry, and then I can start working on the bike chassis and details. Going to try a purple helmet for the Sgt. No one else in the squad has a helmet, because they're Fast Attack and these guys live a quarter mile at a time.

And these bikes look good. I think the zenithal highlighting is looking cool. What are you using as a glaze?
