And toxic miasma is better. Venoms always die before they can use it, but this guy can charge in, deal HoW, attack (maybe killing shit outright) and unleash miasma just in case. Can really clear out hordes (not that we struggle with that...dakk fexes GO), so at least some utility. Idk, maybe just a way to get stronger synapse in the heavy slot? If the thing was like 130 I could see it, or if it had S6 and a 3+...but man. Why GW, why?

Maleceptor is so garbage. It has to take ALL the effectiveness of every other psyker to get off a mediocre power, and that's if it's lucky. A Zoanthrope has just as much kill potential for less than a third of the psychic dice commitment and, in my opinion, is much more durable as well as being 1/4 of the cost. And Zoans still kinda blow.
Also, Malanthropes for rock solid synapse at half the cost. I just don't see Nids being the psychic monstrosity they should be, and this crapstick doesn't help.
Toxicrene is fine I guess. Not getting across the board any time soon, but rerolls to wound at 2+ are nice. WS3 for a CC-dedicated killbeast is utterly stupid though, as half his lovely attacks won't get through on even effing guardsmen. He's just not going to get into combat ever.
Man. Really takes the wind outta your asshole.

I can forgive WS3 as a design element to the army... these creatures are big, bulky monstrocities, not agile killing machines (a few key monsters aside).
That, in theory, is what sets the Tyrant and Trygon apart. Sadly, both of these, in combat form, are already pretty lackluster.
The biggest issue they face is pure inability to survive. A 4+ save is a joke, plain and simple. Thanks for playin', kids. The Psy power on the Malething is... pretty horrible, UNLESS it's a d3 glancing hits, instead of just 1. Then you have a very almost kind of reliable way to do legitimate damage to a vehicle, regardless of armor. Unless it's a Knight, of course, which is very nearly a hard counter to Tyranids as it is.
Hmm.
So yeah. Terrible.
Toxic Miasma is a terrible waste of an ability, but at least these things have a big enough base to hit a legitimate number of enemies when surrounded, unlike the venomthrope.
Heh... these were totally put out just so people would buy them to convert into Malanthropes. "No, we won't put out Forge World kits in easy-to-work-with Plastic... Never again!!! ..... but we may put out surprisingly similar bits that you can kitbash for half the cost!!!"

Actually, in defense of Toxic Miasma, I would never buy it, but whenever I remembered something had it stock and I set it off, it's always killed something. So... go figure.
There are some other rumors coming out of Lords of War Gaming, where all this stuff came from. Nids/BA box with (probably) some character for Nids and an additional big MC dual kit. So maybe we can get our hopes up all over again in a couple of weeks here.

Oh nevermind, false alarm I've seen the rumors, but nothing to falsify it...where are you seeing the "false alarm" rumors? So far the most likely culprits for a Nid special character release in the event of a Nid/BA campaign box are: -special zoanthrope (out of stock on most GW sites in finecast) -special warrior prime with wings (so the prime joining shrikes makes sense) -shrike models (so we actually have them...only unit in the book without a proper model)

Shrikes joining Warriors at all is a waste of time, so why bother joining one to Shrikes? I guess it's an ablative 3+ save? Probably more useful there. But shrikes aren't worth the investment anyway.
And FW sells Warrior Wings, which is "how you make shrikes". Not my $2 awesome wings from wherever I got them online, that look awesome and were $2.
And Jeff, seriously. Options are for Imperials. It's not like Tyranids grow their creatures to order based on need or anything. Geez.

I know, but I'm saying if they gave us a way to join a prime to shrikes, it would make sense to give us options to give that prime wings, so at least the unit as a whole can still jump around and make use of the jump infantry rules. Not saying its ideal, or that we need it, but it would at least be a cool model, and would fill a gap in our model selection.

I mean, in real terms, if I could make a DE archon that was S5, T6, and had Poison 2+ AP2, I'd pay well over 160 for it. The trouble is going to be getting it to combat, but it has fleet so that should help. Should be a turn 2 charge, and it will clear out anything that it targets, unless you go through cover like a loser first.

Yeah, I'll get one and build that just cause of new Nid models (I built a Haruspex after all), but man... such a let down. So weird they wouldn't even allow it options or even something like taking a unit of 3. SOMETHING.
Speaking of the 'spex, in those pics, the WD staff says something about letting Haruspexes take down Imperial Knights, while the Toxicrene sticks to MCs and Infantry. Not only is it another item indicative of GW's absolute obliviousness to their own game system, but also 100% contrary to the fluff of the 'spex.
