That took a long time... I am essentially done my block of pikemen (need to do some touch ups, the drum, and the two shields). I forgot how little fun it was to paint 48 nearly identical miniatures. At least with the sword and shield guys, it's only 39 of them.

Any chance of a close up? The unit looks great.

Thanks. The painting on them was mainly done with the thought of "Will it look good enough as a giant block on the tabletop between two other large blocks and a few small blocks?" That said, here are some close ups:

Very nice! Where did you get the helmets?

Oh, yeah, I said it's all Perry Miniatures, but the Roman heads and shields are from Warlord Games. It's all truescale, though, so these dudes look a bit scrawny compared to GW guys.

This, for some reason, went a lot faster than the pikemen. There are some leather details that I'm not sure how I want to paint, and I still need to figure out what I want to do for the drum (on this and the other unit), but they're otherwise finished. And I did forget to prime the shields, so those still need to be painted (and primed). So I guess not really done yet, but close enough for the time being.

After a two/three month hiatus, the crossbow men are also done! Of course, like the last unit, they're lacking their shields (pavises in this case), but those are details to finish up at the end. I'm not super looking forward to the 40-some block of halberdiers that's next up. I wonder if this has something to do with why people stopped playing Warhammer...

These are looking good as always. Have you had a chance to play 9th age recently? I haven't in over a year.

I've not played 9th Age ever. I don't have any fantasy armies in Chicago, so I haven't gotten around to any fantasy gaming. I haven't actually played Warhammer since 6th edition, so it'll be a huge change. I also don't even have this army built up to 4500 points (or whatever), this is just the infantry of the army: I still need to buy/build artillery and cavalry... it's a lot of dudes.

Well, the 42 halberdiers are all done (bases aside). I was shocked at how quickly this went and I'm fairly happy with the results. Obviously there is more I could do, but not for a block of 42 guys that will crumple like paper on the tabletop. Handgunners are next and then that's all the troops I have assembled and primed.

As a tyranid player I empathize with the "bunch of the same dude" thing. But those are looking really nice! You did a solid amount of detail for "block of dudes between blocks of dudes".
Will look great all finished on the table

This is the last of the infantry I need for this army. I'm sure I'll eventually end up making another big block of pikemen when the official list comes out to sub in for the halberdiers. Next up is the heavy cavalry and the artillery.

These are some tests for how I'm going to paint my Lannisters. The first is a using Minitaire blood red over a zenithal highlight with a matte varnish over the cloth. The second is red ink over the same (for some reason the face looks a little melted, but that's an issue with the model). I think I'm going to go with the first. <iframe width="9" height="12.980000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 9px; height: 12.98px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 71px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_50609361" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="9" height="12.980000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 9px; height: 12.98px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 395px; top: 71px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_78824244" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="9" height="12.980000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 9px; height: 12.98px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 656px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_79492062" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="9" height="12.980000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 9px; height: 12.98px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 395px; top: 656px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_69226070" scrolling="no"></iframe>

I really like the 2nd one actually in terms of the sharpness of the highlights, but if you want a more worn and gritty red then the first one is definitely better. Both are looking good though!
