H'okay, so...
Something I've been meaning to check up on, and just recently did via the cheat sheet, is the order of "choose mission" vs "choose army". Point being, according to "The Rules", you are meant to determine the mission *before* you write up your army list (assuming that determining the army/points values entails a list).
It's very Warmahordes, in that way, where tournament-wise you bring, I think three? army lists, and choose which to use during each round (knowing the army your opponent will represent, but not their list).
The biggest allegory I can draw to 40k is with my Nids. Can't speak for the other buggly players, but I have noticed a trend where "standard" (read; fairly to-the-fluff, mix of swarm/mid/MC) are actually pretty solid at board control for objectives, but lackluster at killpoint games.
Long story short - does anyone think that bringing 2-3 army lists, and choosing based on mission, would be more appropriate to 7th ed? Obviously for anyone doing tournament training it's a bit moot, but also most tournaments have modified objectives that you know before hand anyway... but for general pick-up games? I wonder if it would actually help draw out a few lesser used units. Tervigons are amazing for securing objectives (and more and more as they spawn), but terrible for KP games... but I would happily swap them out for Venomthropes (which I rarely take) in a KP game for the added durability. Or maybe I just need to kitbash a Malanthrope and have a functional elite unit? Ba-haaaaaah! Srsly though.
Anyway, just a thought.

This is basically the premise behind the narrative campaign me and Jeff designed. That is one of the fundamental parts of the gameplay. Likewise, Nick Baran used to run a tournament at Adepticon that had a very similiar theme, youd build a list that had inter changeable parts. I think many people have/do play that way.

I tend to write up a few lists and bring them. Defense, offense and then Other. Other tends to be weird lists or crazy ideas.

As the Great Devourer, you should only be concerned on feasting upon the enemy flesh! So you should build one list.....one to table your opponent. Your opponent can't win if he's tabled, so it makes the mission/army a mute point :-) So I think this is the way for you to go from now on. And I don't expect anything less :-)

Just saw this. I used to run an event at AdeptiCon, as Will mentioned, where you showed up with a 1000 point list and a 250 point sideboard that you could use to alter your army because each game you played, you'd play on a different warzone. That way, you could replace your landraider or aircraft with deepstriking terminators if you ended up on a Zone Mortalis board or you could field that landraider to double as cover as you fought your way across the mostly open desert board. Personally, building an army to a theme, and then having sublists to alter your main list is great for narrative play and for being flexible for pick up games. "Hey, remember when we played last time you decimated my terminators? Let's play again but since they all died against you last time, I'll replace them with a couple scout squads instead." It also makes tournaments more interesting in my biased opinion.

Here's my 2 cents:
Casual - Cousomize (or tailor) your list however the hell you want. 'Oh you've got 3 flyers and swarms? That's cool, I'll bring some anti-air and flamers'
Competitive - (I.E. Pay-to-play w/ prizes) Bring a list that you're forced to stick with. 'Hmm no idea what I'm up against, better try my best to build a well-rounded list'
My opinion anyway, tournaments should be strict and CST meetups should be flexibil!

We...we should do a 1500 point 40k tournament where you bring 1250 and 3 250 point sideboards...would be a ton of fun to have more evenly matched games in that regard, since you can slightly tweak your unit comp in order to balance the scales vs each enemy.

I completely agree with this. The difficulty now-a-days is always finding a place to host something like that though. How many "tables" do we even own any more? If there is interest in it though I'd be down to help run it, and I found a way to make cheap tourney quality terrain for ~$5 a table.

We could rent out the game room in my building for a day - have a 10 am start, can go as late as we need it to. Can probably fit 4 tables in there comfortably.

I have a flat, foldable 6x4 with no terrain I could throw in. I really like the idea of a main list with sideboard options.
