Oh yeah, they should for sure just be S10 and d3 wounds/hull points on a 6 imho.

Were people really mucking up the rules that badly? I had always thought it was fairly clear that each model was taking the [insert crazy number] wounds... making D weapons perfect for tackling heavy hitters (often a D on D slugfest).
The whole bit about only wounding what you hit is a bit of a surprise to me, though, and something I'd want to compare to the standard rules (expecting to be proven wrong, but just for safety). Although, if that's true to the letter, wouldn't that allow D Sniping, instead of the typical "remove the closest first"? For templates it matters less, but for the ranged blasts, you could start fairly-reliably killing off characters/special weapons/etc by making sure (read; hoping it doesn't scatter) it hits the specific models you want dead.
In any case, an interesting article.

The way template weapons work is that you can only remove the NUMBER of models that you hit - you still remove them closest first. But that's the key; if you flamer template 5 models with wraitguard, you're only going to remove 5 models max from the unit - starting from closest first. Not 5D3 models, not 3D3 1D6 models, just 5 models.
And if you land a blast marker on a commander's head, along with hitting 4 other dudes, he only gets wounded if there aren't 5 closer dudes to the shooter.
The biggest take a way for me was that D doesn't act as instant death, just S10 - so T6 and Eternal Warrior work fine. And FnP can work fine (see T6 and ETW), and invulns work fine. The weapon is going to miss and do NO damage exactly as often as it does D6 wounds, so what you're really looking at is a weapon that reliably does 2 wounds to non ETW models, or 2 hull points to a vehicle.

FNP says in it's USR (brb pg 164) that it cant be taken against D weapons
