Well for better or for worse, looks like round bases are involved in the new edition one way or another. Lots of pics from Warhammer World weekend showing lizards, skaven, WoC, and DoC on a mix of round and square bases:

More on Faeit and other placea too. Have to admit lizards look freaking cool on round bases, but I'm curious how they interact with the rules. There also isn't a lot of reason to them it seems - pics above show two units of skirmishers, one in round one in square, monsters and cavalry on ovals, and a traditionally ranked infantry (temple guard) on 40mm round as well.
Here's hoping the round are for the rumored skirmish game included in 9th, allowing us to still play the main game with the traditional blocks we're used to.

Well the good news is that if round bases are also able to be used in WHB I suddenly own a Khorne Daemon army. Woot.

I have to admit the "round base freak out" is super annoying to me. LotR scaled up to infantry blocks with War of the Ring. It's been done before. Those Lizardmen on round bases look gorgeous. If it happens, I'm all for it strictly for the rule of cool.

Rule of cool is always awesome, I'm just curious how the rules of the game will change if indeed round bases are the new thing. I liked that WHFB presented a distinct and different strategic challenge to 40k, with movement and setting up charges turns in advance being the keys to victory - round bases could mean anything from "it just looks cool, but the rules are the same" to "its like 40k with 360 degree line of sight and charge arc", so we'll have to just wait and see what develops the next few weeks leading into the new book in June.
