It's all happening! No actual game play footage but if you've played any other Total War games you'd have an idea of what to expect.

And Atilla, their latest offering is amazing. With a core of Empire, Dwarfs, Orcs, Vampire Counts and Tzeentch flavoured Chaos. Second and Third DLC are Skaven/Lizardmen and various Elves. They are promising three full games - so significant victory condition lead story modes - that will combine into one. With blood and gore DLC pack, potential Elector Count and Chaos Faction DLC this is a three year project before the whole game is out there. Just brilliant. So, so excited.

They did also mention vampire counts. I'm interested to see how they are handled as they don't have much in the way of dedicated ranged units, and zombies/skeletons are notoriously slow (AKA completely fucked against an army with artillery or more than 1 unit of archers in Total War terms.) Really I want to see how they incorporate magic into the classic Total War formula. That's going to be what makes this more than just a Total War skins mod.

Magic just becomes an artillery unit. And yes, I left out vampire counts. Now I will edit my post to make it look like I didn't!

And vampires have sweet cavalry which mashes artillery and missile troops in total war. Especially with the new line of sight mechanic. I am running Picts right now and rolling right over the game with Bezerkers and infiltrating cavalry.

Oh yeah, I forgot that vampires have mounts which can run through obstacles and other units, and that the AI generally doesn't remember to put up spear walls unless your cavalry is really really obvious about charging their artillery.
Now I look forward to the skin mod that makes the skeletal steeds unicorns so I can re-enact a Gloryhammer album.

I love the Total War series. I really do. Although I have to say at this point I'd eat my hat if they managed anything approaching an AI using tactics more sophisticated than ZERG RUSH.
I mean it's a lovely game, as my 200+ hours playing Empire alone will attest, it's just not going to be what I hope for.

See how young Mr Tack spells Dwarfs correctly in that article. That was me. And the power of Twitter. And being a pedantic twat!

So I love Attila. But I was highly disappointed by Rome 2. If this game shows an improvement in the AI department then it will be a fun experience. If it doesn't then well...
Right now the large number of competing factions is what gives this game it's challenge. I worry that the AI won't improve and with a reduced number of factions it'll fall apart.
Don't get me wrong I love the Total War franchise but Rome 2 left me feeling a little disappointed. Attila has helped but still the worry remains.
