Can anyone recommend a good decal remover? And is there anywhere in Chicago I can get it, or is this something that has to be ordered online?
See below: I've read there are 'decal remover' products that melt away the excess clear gloss.

Depends, really. Are you trying to preserve the paint job?

Maybe what I'm looking for is called 'decal solvent'? I'm happy with the paint job and the decal, I just want advice on how to get rid of the excess clear bit of decal?
Does such a product to break it down exhist? Or am I screwed because the already applied decals were not cut out better?

English Cris is likely the best person to talk to about Decals, hes put them on the majority of his marines I believe. I've seen him use a solvent or something to remove the shiny portion in the past.

As far as I know there isn't anything to dissolve the plastic away. With my stuff I use Micro-set and Micro-sol which are for decals. The micro-sol allows the decal to conform to uneven surfaces (like shoulder pads) better but it doesn't do anything to the glossiness. I use a matte varnish on the decals to make them less shiny.

I've seen a lot of people who choose to use decals do a couple of things to help with the issue:
1) use an exacto knife to cut away as much of the excess decal as possible, so you're left with (ideally) just the sigil or whatever that you want with no excess.
2) just paint over the shiny gloss part with the basecoat color you used on the model

Thanks for all the input! FYI, here's what I ended up doing: 1) Tried scratching the decals off w/ exacto knife; ended up just scraping the areas flat down to the plastic (before picture) 2) Repainted the base coat in the areas, and re-inked (was worried it appear slightly differently colored, but fortunately it looks almost exactly the same) [this is actually an after pic] 3) Reapplied the decals, but this time did a much better job cutting! Long story short, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND CUTTING THE DECALS OUT WELL. (Don't be a noob like me!) There's some air bubbles or what not under the decals, and it's still a little glossy, but hey it's better than any free-handing I'm capable of (see the painting section for how it ended up)!
