Tossing around a few ideas for Skitarri, because this is the coolest new army release since I joined the hobby 20 years ago. Reading through the units, they seem like they have a lot of synergy between the units - but one thing that concerns me is that they are footslogging, and that's scary in 7th edition. So I want to do one of two things:
1) Ally them with an army (imperial) that can give them cheap transports without a heavy HQ/Troop tax (IG maybe? Space wolves for drop pods?)
2) Take a Knight, so your opponent will be distracted by the behemoth long enough to get everything else in range
What do you think is the best way to go? A Preliminary list looks something like this:
Troops
5 Vangaurd - 2x Arc Rifles (24" haywire), omnispex (-1 to cover saves)
5 Vanguard - 2x Arc Rifles, omnispex
10 Vanguard - 3x plasma calivers (18" 3 shot plasma), omnispex
10 Vanguard - 3x plasma calivers, omnispex
Elite
5 Sicarian Ruststalkers, Alpha with Dataspike
5 Sicarian Ruststalkers, Alpha with Dataspike
Heavy
3 Ironstrider Ballistarii - 2 autocannons, 1 lascannon
3 Ironstrider Ballistarii - 2 autocannons, 1 lascannon
2 Onager Dunecrawlers - 2 Iccarrus Arrays (1 S7/AP2 skyfire, 5 S6/AP3 skyfire, and 2 S7/AP4 skyfire/interceptor...flyer rape trains basically).
This totals ~1500 points, so it gives me ~350 to work with. I can wiggle some stuff around to get a Knight in there, or I can try to take imperial allies to grab some transports for the ruststalkers and 5-man vanguard units to help them get in range, and find some space for an aegis or similar to help with defense of my T3/4+ save models.
Thoughts? Which route would you go - and have you seen some smart use of allies to grab better transports for Imperials in your tournament goings?
EDIT: For those that aren't caught up on my explanation of all the Skitarii stuff from the Media threads - the vanguard are basic infantry. Guardsmen stats, 4+ armor, furious charge, relentless, FnP 6+. They're radioactive, so anyone in combat with them is -1T. Basic guns are 18", S3, Assault 3, and every to wound of 6 counts as 2 wounds, that must be saved for individually.
Decided to go with 2 small units of vanguard to work anti vehicle duty, and 2 larger units to deal out anti-infantry pain and hold objectives. 10 man units will be dishing out 9 S7/AP2 shots from their plasmas, and 21 S3 Rad shots which result in an average of 7 wounds total vs T4 (including special rule wounds). Not terrible for the points.
Ruststalkers are S4, with furious charge and FnP 6+, so S5 on the charge. Weapons are AP5 in first round of combat, but AP2 on a 6 to wound, and AP2 after the first round of combat. But the real fun comes from the fact they have haywire grenades...and the alpha has a Dataspike, which allows an additional haywire hit at I10. So, 6 haywire attacks vs vehicles in combat, meaning each time they charge a vehicle...the vehicle is dead. Period.
Ironstriders have cognis TL weapons - which means that they count as BS2 for snapshots instead of BS1. So, hitting flyers on 5s with TL S7 and TLS9...basically an insurance policy vs flyers, light vehicles, and pulling the last HP off of an AV13+ vehicle if necessary.
Onagers have a 6++ invuln, are AV12, HP3. Invulns stack, so with two of them in the unit they have a 5++ invuln. Icarrus Array allows all 3 modes to be fired, so they should absolutely shred flyers and FMCs. Unfortunately, being dedicated skyfire, they have to snap fire at ground targets...but hey, tyrant spam/daemon prince spam is toast.
