Hey crapstains,
So, after all you left me and Russell and Clint to clean everything up, we started up a conversation with Aileen that Russell and I had on a previous occasion about our group and the "exclusivity" of the name "Brohammer." Obviously, the intention of the name was not to be alienating (none of us are evil), but we think that in light of increasing membership and a growing public presence, a name change might be in order.
To be honest, when I've approached places like Cat & Mouse, Wanderer's, and Geek Bar, I've been very hesitant to use the Brohammer name. It's not insulting to anyone, but it is inherently inclusive in regards to how one perceive what we look for in our fellow gamers, and has prompted me to usually include a disclaimer alongside the name, assuring whomever I was e-mail that we are not a bunch of misogynist idiots. As of now, we are all extremely homogeneous in our membership, and it's not necessarily bad that we're a bunch of white males, but it has the potential to give off quite a vibe.
Additionally, the above-mentioned organizations which we have essentially entered into pseudo-business partnerships with make inclusiveness and acceptance a top priority. In fact, the first impression I had of Wanderer's Refuge was through their website, which greets its visitors with this message before anything else: We are an all-inclusive game store and gaming space in beautiful Lincoln Square, Chicago. We want to be the place that anyone feels welcomed to shop & play, regardless of gender/identity, age, sexuality, size, color, etc. I always thought that was awesome. When Russell and I first had this conversation, it was about the eventuality of such a shift, and we now think the time has come that we adopt a similar policy.
As far as logistics, all we'd really have to do is switch to a new freeforums site, so that's not really a thing.
So, what should we call ourselves? As neutral as "Chicago Wargamers" is, it's also as boring as Ultramarines. Russell and I batted around the names Second City Cockslaves and Windy City Bonergoblins, but I think those are out. We should also consider the future impact we might have, whether that be as an organized team of tournament participants, tournament organizers, maybe even a proper .com website, etc. Nothing should be off the table, and we might as well nail something super cool down now.
TL;DR: "Brohammer" sounds like it's exclusively for white dudes, we should change it to... what?
Have at it!
