With the imminent coming of the destroyer, and what I assume will be his devouring of my free time, it has occurred to me that I might have built up a backlog of work in 40k that I will never have the opportunity to finish. With all the painting and work I have put into DG, and the awesome direction Chaos in general is moving in, there is no way I am parting with this army. More to the point, I am already looking to expand into a vanilla heretic chapter, with the ultimate goal of being able to field each of the specific deamon bound chaos forces, and one vanilla.
This leaves me to question if there is room and time for my Orks. I have a gargantuan Ork army, somewhere around 6-8k worth. That is a ton of boyz to paint before I even get to the massive number of vehicles I've built and converted. Orks are pretty solid right now, so I could probably sell this stuff off piecemeal for a solid amount of hobby funds.
Here is my question to the 40k elders here....is this a short sighted outlook? Should I hold on to my Orks even if I haven't played a single game in 8th with them yet with the thought that someday I will get around to them, and will regret it if I sell them now? Or should I drop em while they are hot, get what I can for them, and focus my limited time on the army that I am actually playing? Games Plus has it's annual auction this fall....
Thoughts?

I think it's more about what you think you are going to get out of it. I started with Tyranids, but I am moving away from the army and looking to get rid of some of them just because they are taking up space and I don't particularly enjoy running the army. It's sounds like you really enjoy death guard and chaos BUT you might still enjoy playing Orks. That you have not played them in 8th edition, I would tell you to give the army a shake for a game or two.
There is also the argument of just de-cluttering and focusing on things which has merit. Since you have SO many Orks, maybe getting rid of some would be good because I cannot imagine what I would do with that many points. However, definitely don't get rid of all of it and keep a functional army. Play them a few times and see how it feels. I feel it would be a major oversight to ditch the army without having run them at all in the current edition.

Yeah, I am giving my Necrons away to a buddy in order to suck him into this plastic hell, so that should clear up some space. I have also put a lot of conversion work that I am very proud of into my Orks, and I already own basically every model I would ever need in the maximum quantity that I could ever want, so it's not really costing me anything except paint.
Death Guard takes an absurd amount of time to paint, but I am slowly slogging through it and will probably be out the other side faster than I anticipate. If I can keep to my pledge to not buy a new model for an army till all the other ones are painted, it's not like my hobby cost output will be insane, so I don't really need the cash, and if I had it I would just blow it on more unpainted models.
You are right, I definitely need to play Orks before I consider selling them.

See if you enjoy painting and/or playing the orks. If you're having a good time with them, they can be your hobby side project. I have thought about making an army of them myself since it looks like they would be silly. In terms of money, is this a matter where you would recycle the money into something you care more about? Do you find it hard to stomach putting more money into the hobby but want new stuff? This is what I've been thinking about. I'm starting to put stuff onto ebay now, and I've been telling myself for a while if I haven't thought about an army in more than a year it's time for it to go.

I've often in the past sold off parts or all of armies that I wasn't currently working on, due to space time or commitment.
The only one I've ever regretted was my tyranid army I sold on 2011. I've been playing nids since 1998 and I sold close to 4000 points of nearly fully painted nids due to time and money constraints.
I've since built that army back up but it's not nearly as painted.
So if orks are "your" faction how nids are "my" faction, ie the army that got you into the game and who's lore and models you will always adore regardless of how good they are in game, I would caution against selling off everything.
I would say keep what's painted or keep the models that you worked hard to convert. Eventually you may want them back and have to start over as I did!

To piggyback on Nick's point, your avatar on here is an Ork in a tophat, not, I don't know, a maggot in a tophat. So, yeah, if you love the Orks and put a bunch of effort into converting an Ork army, then keep them.

Plus I will literally never sell my Gargantuan Squigoth, so at this point it looks like they are just going into the attic until I need a break from chaos
