Has anybody tried it? Does it work well at all? Or do you just waste the reserve points?
Now that the new csm models seem to emphasize summoning, I am curious to see if it works.

Yeah summoning isn't great. I tried it a few times with very minor success. Unless you are summoning a Lord of war or maybe horrors it ain't good.

Opening this back up...a unit can't move after being summoned, right? Correct - however its worth noting that the guy who just won Adepticon had summoning in his list, and it was interesting watching the finals to see how he used it. He ran ahriman and 4-5 daemon princes surrounded by plaguebearers for screening, and then from what it looked like gave himself enough reinforcement points so that he could a) summon more plaguebearers if one of his units of 30 died, so he could refill his screen, or depending on flow of the game or match up he could summon in horrors for offense and more smite or bloodletters to counter charge. If you're bringing a list like that, and you bring summoning as a swiss army knife to help you secure the win late game, it can be really strong. I think he only had like 150 or 200 points of summoning available to him, and with how points efficient daemon princes and ahriman are, they did a lot of heavy lifting before he needed to rely on those reinforcement points.

When people say Swiss army knife... Can I set aside the points, then summon anything available within that value?

When people say Swiss army knife... Can I set aside the points, then summon anything available within that value? Yes, if you have unclaimed points (say you brought 1600 pts to a 2000 pt game) you can summon any amount of demon units from outside of the game up to that 400 pt limit

That's the thing though you need to bring a list like THAT to use summoning effectively. But I will agree with Nick that summoning can help win late game, especially for holding objectives or holding the line. Just don't invest too much into summoning and don't expect to make charges unless you bring horrors (kill one in overwatch you spawn a model 2" closer to the enemy unit so your 9 inch charges becomes 7 or 6 if you fandango it enough.) I think only tzeentch and nurgle can really benefit from it. Slaanesh and khrone...not so much.
