so I'm tempting highlighting for the first time and where i can get nice thin lines on the edges it looks nice, but the rest of the time the lines are coming in thick i was wondering if any of you veteran painters out there have some tips that you can toss my way!

One thing I occasionally use is Watercolor pencils. works best on sharp edges. Put a dull coat layer on the area you want to highlight. Then use the pencil to highlight your edge without rubbing off the paint. Then dull coat again to seal the pencil on. Here's a quick video about it. youtu.be/L_oM5JMkwQI

Just using the flat of your brush rather than the tip, and rubbing it at an angle along the edges of armor, will achieve the same effect without the need for additional tools; as for making highlights that are not on the edge, and getting them nice and neat, it just comes down to using a small brush (I use a small layer brush or an artificer layer brush, or a 00 windsor and newton) with thinned down paint, keeping the brush at a sharp point, and practice.
Also, if your highlight comes in too thick, just go back with whatever your base paint was and paint up against the highlight, to thin it out. You can always cover up mistakes, even highlighting mistakes, by using the color underneath it!

The Duncan videos definitely help. But really the best way to improve is with practice.
Start with troops to get the hang of it before moving to your big expensive minis.
When I started painting, I sucked at highlighting. I still suck at highlighting, but I now suck a little bit less.
