Ok, so this was a wild thought I had. Kill points typically make MSUs risky. So my solution: a fuck ton of spore mines. I really like large blasts. And I'm bored. 1000 points CAD: Patriarch, ML2, warlord -115 Magus, ML2, the Crouchling - 85
Elite: Metamorphs, x6 +leader w Bonesword&whip, icon, 2whips, 4 claws - 117 Genestealers x7 -98 Genestealers x8 - 112
Troops: Acolytes x5, 2 flamers, leader w Bonesword -80 Acolytes x5, demo charge -60 Acolytes x5, demo charge -60 Neophytes x14 - 2x flamers - 80 Neophytes x12 - 2x grenade launchers, 2 mining lasers -100
Formation: Minefield - 90 points Spore Mine x3 Spore Mine x3 Spore Mine x3 Mucolid spore Mucolid Spore Mucolid Spore
The Sporefield is like the ultimate distraction Carnifex because they don't give kill points when they die, and they return to ongoing reserves on a 4+.
And that uses basically all my cultists. I could upgrade the demo charges to saws if i drop 2 neophytes. BOOM.

I think its okay. I believe the spore mine is a nice touch. Still not a fan of the demo charges, but if it works it works.

Haha yeah. But in this case, I literally am out of other options and needed to reach 1000 points. My only other models are a primus and aberrant. I really like the fluffy idea of demo charges more than the execution. I did the mathhammer and there's still a 38% chance of a direct hit and like a 22% chance of an indirect hit if the enemy models are tightly packed (it goes up the more spread out they are). On the other hand, it's only a 10% chance of hitting yourself.
Regardless, I definitely want to try this list at some point (but not for the tourney, it's all unpainted)

Sporefield is awesome board control, you can cut off entire areas of a 6x4 and nearly half of a 4x4 from your opponent by covering your mines everywhere. It forces your opponent to either waste a turn shooting at a 15 point mucolid/spore mine unit, or risk getting hit with S8 and S6 blasts that can just come back after on a 4+.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. One of the hardest things with GSC is rolling a 3 or 4 with acolytes and getting them shot off the board before the can charge. The spores provide more distraction units. At the 1000 point level, I'm banking on opponents only having 6-7 units max, so they will have a lot of hard choices during the shooting phase

Does the final FAQ allow units like the spores to re-enter via DS? I'm not sure if I ever saw the final word on that.
On topic, I kind of like it. The spore field is a really cool idea, and can be super-useful. It meshes well with the cult's "pop up anywhere" theme, and it's a hard pill to swallow to spend a unit's shooting at a 15 point recycle-able troop (that doesn't award points), but it's a nasty surprise if they don't...

I assumed yes because units in ongoing reserve usually come in with whatever their profile allows (ie. Deepstrike mishap still comes back in via deepstrike) and it's clearly RAI. May try this list next tourney once I get them painted

That's how I had always played it as well, but the first round of FAQ's specifically denied that ability (stating that anything coming in from ongoing reserves had to move onto the board normally). Nids felt that pretty hard, as the Skyblight was in part so awesome due to continuous DS'ing gargoyles, but the spore mines in particular just loved it with their 3" movement.
There's still a use, as you can crowd an objective near your board edge late-game, but it'd be worth looking into the final FAQ to see what the ruling actually is.
