Mathew and Dan played differently so now I am confused, can somebody give me the solid answer on how walls work in the game?

Mathew and Dan played differently so now I am confused, can somebody give me the solid answer on how walls work in the game? Movement: IF ruins: Then you can walk on through. If Buildings: Then only through doors or hatches. If undetermined: Discuss with your opponent what it may be. either a building or ruins. IF being shot at: If the model/unit has at least 25% covered from the wall, then the unit confers a + X cover save base on the terrain. (As mentioned above: Either a ruins (+4) or a building (+4 most times)). anything else good sir?

So models can walk right through a 10" high wall if it's part of a ruin? I thought the FAQ said that you have to walk around or climb over walls, so the distance would include the 10" climb

A: Yes. Please refer to Games workshop FAQ section for 40k, page 11 under terrain section. Edit: IF you are trying to climb it, then you would take into account the distance to scale the wall to reach the floor you want. Jump inf. would take the distance of the climb as well with their 12" movement. Your example, suppose there is a floor on that 10" wall then a regular inf. can't make it (due to their 6" move) while a jump would only have 2" left over to move forward (assuming they can maintain coherency)

This is the excerpt from the Warhammer 40,000 the Rules FAQ that came out in November: Q: A ruin (e.g. a Shrine of the Aquila) is treated as difficult terrain, but does this mean that models can move through the walls? A: Yes.

The real question here is "is this a ruin" or "is this a building" which has to be decided before the game At the Dojo, we almost exclusively play as "everything that's man made is a ruin" though by no means is that how it is played everywhere, and there are very much indeed pieces of terrain in that basement that are fully in tact imperial buildings. Buildings have a slew of different rules between them, such as firing points, void shields, access points, a damage table, armour values, escape hatches, comms relays, sandbags, defense lines. You can't walk through a wall on a building. Ruins have none of that - they are just a 4+ cover save like was mentioned. In the case of a Ruin, it is ruled that you can ignore the wall for movement as long as you take a difficult terrain test. Note you don't ignore the wall for Line of Sight

Adepticon, and nearly all tournaments for that matter, also uses exclusively ruins for bulidng-style terrain pieces except in the case of purchased fortifications (I.E. Void Shield Generator or Bastion).
