This came up in a game yesterday. Scenario: an IC joins a squad but is on the end of a conga line. That squad charges and suffers 3 kills from overwatch. All 3 wounds are directed at the IC but through look out sir rolls the 3 guys behind the IC die. The IC is now 5 inches away from a living squad member. Can the unit still charge with the IC or does the IC now charge alone?

"In order to join a unit, an Independent Character simply has to move so that he is within the 2" unit coherency distance of a friendly unit at the end of their Movement phase. If the Independent Character is within 2" of more than one unit at the end of its Movement phase, the player must declare which unit it is joining. If an Independent Character does not intend to (or cannot) join a unit, it must (where possible) remain more than 2" away from it at the end of the Movement phase. This is to make clear whether they have joined a unit or not. Note that, after an Independent Character joins a unit, that unit can move no further that Movement phase.
An Independent Character can leave a unit during the Movement phase by moving out of unit coherency with it. He cannot join or leave during any other phase – once shots are fired or charges are declared, it is too late to join in or duck out!"ICs join or leave a unit in the Movement phase only and cannot leave during any other phase, including the assault. Further down in the same section the following is also stated: While an Independent Character is part of a unit, he counts as part of the unit for all rules purposes, though he still follows the rules for characters.
As the IC is part of the unit he follows the same standard rules for assault. In your example above, the unit that was charging with the IC would now simply have to attempt to maintain Coherency after the charge. Following the standard rules for assaulting you would move the closest charging model (presumably the IC in your example) into base contact with the nearest enemy model. Then you move the remaining models in the ICs squad while abiding by the below rules: - A charging model must end its charge move in unit coherency with another model in its own unit that has already moved.
- If possible, a charging model must move into base contact with an enemy model within reach that is not already in base contact with another charging model. If there are no such enemy models in reach, the model must move into base contact with an enemy model that is already in base contact with a charging model.
- If a charging model cannot reach any enemy models, it must try to move within 2" horizontally or 6" vertically of one of its own unit’s models that is already in base contact with an enemy. If this is impossible, it must simply stay in unit coherency.
In your example the IC would still be part of the squad until they moved out of coherency in the Movement phase.

Yep IC joins or leaves in movement phase only. I see this mis-played a lot, I.E. 'I won the assault, so now in my consolidation move I'm splitting/joining this unit'

Thank god you're there to keep everybody in line, Doug. It would be utter chaos and nonsense without you!
