Hi Guys,
Just moved to Chicago, as well as getting back into 40k after about 8 years starting and stopping. I love doing the math and putting lists together but my motivation for getting back into the swing of things is getting an army to field for Adepticon. I do want to be competitive, in the sense that I want to try to win, but I want to win or lose playing by the challenge and fluff I set forth for myself. With that in mind I have been struggling because it seems they only allow two formations in an army list. Therefore, I want to reach out to see if anybody had some suggestions i should look at for building a list.
Here is what I know I want to do.
Core/Must Haves * to have a large presence of artillery, mainly in the form of basilisks. * to use Inquisition Ally, I like the codex and modeling
Likes * Minimal cost, numerous foot solders * Chimeras * Rapiers from FW * Storm Troopers * Having some degree of maneuver units available
Dislikes *Tanks
Any feedback, advice, or suggestions on how to make something like this in the confines of the Adepticon rules would be most appreciative!

Which Adepticon event(s) where you planning on playing in? When you say your only allowed two "formations" do you mean Detachments?
That said, generally, I'd recommend taking a Combined Arms Detachment (CAD) to get either Objective Secured Plasma Vets if you want to have a lower body count (and less models to paint) or Infantry Platoons to drown your opponent in bodies and heavy weapons teams. From their, its worth looking into the Emperor's Wrath Artillery formation from Mont'ka (AKA the Cadian supplement). It allows you to take a few artillery pieces, and issue them orders. Nothing hits quite like a Basilisk that ignores cover. Tempestus Scions are easy to fit into a Guard CAD, as you can put a whole platoon into a single Elite choice. The Psykana Division is another great formation to consider, it provides you with a ton of warp charges and psykers to buff your more inaccurate units. Inquisitors are incredibly easy to fit into any list, as their detachment can be just the inquisitor. If you want to bring with a Warband for the inquisitor, the general way to make them effective is either bolter/stormbolter acolytes and 2+ Jakero or the Priest deathstar (Xenos Inquisitor w/ Rad Grenade + Priest w/ Litanies of Faith + Deathcult Assassins + Crusaders in a Land Raider). The Jakero can be unpredictable, whist the "death star" has only middling effectiveness vs. 2+ armor saves. The "psymera" is another valid tactic for inquisitors, you take a standard Chimera with x2 Heavy Bolters and give it psybolt ammo, buffing the bolters to Str 6. All in all, you can achieve your core & likes with Just a CAD + the Inquisitorial Formation or Detachment.

Those are great suggestions Will Blood. And thanks for the welcome Asyrean. Will Blood, indeed I meant detachments, sorry still new. I had looked at other tournaments and it seemed like three was normally the limit, however for what i believe is the big tournament at Adepticon, 2 is the limit. So if I want to have some inquisition that means either taking a normal regiment of IG, or just taking the Wraith Company. Not sure which would work out better.

Actually good sir, I'm meeting an IG player tomorrow around 5:30 pm at the dojo if you want advice. He and I are joining the 40k team tournament for adepticon

I am really at a mental struggle, having not really played a game since 5th edition. I feel like I have had read so many guard strategy articles, but I at least do know where I am headed. I have decided on FW artillery units (which I have always loved), along with some blobs of infantry.
Can anyone share some wisdom on Guard infantry, I just really don't know what to do.

I can't offer you much, all I know is this: there is a guy that trolls this forum from time to time named 'Dougtrio' who will often give very aggressive opinions about Imperial Guard, Accounting and Spray Primer. Do not listen to any of it. I repeat: do the opposite of what Doug says.

Hey JBragg, I'm one of the guys here in Chicago with a sizeable Astra Militarum army, so please let me share my knowledge... First of all, AM is a full codex with many units and play styles available! That being said, here's my current 1,500 point army: 4 leman russes 20 veterans 6 ogryns 4 scout sentinels 4 wyverns As you can see, there are 12 vehicles in this list and I prefer many small units. vroom vroom baby (If you have any questions about how I use these units, feel free to ask me or my opponents But you said you like troops and blobs, that's a totally different strategy but can work too. We have platoon squads that can go up to 50 strong, conscripts up to 50 strong, and characters like preists, psychers, and commissars to keep them in line. Personally that's too many models for me to paint and push around the table, but if you want to do it then nothing is stopping you. With regard to what you like and don't like: Artillary / basilisks - I love my wyverns, hated my manticore, and have never used basilisks. I've heard the FW stuff is really good but also no Exp myself Inquisition - I've never used them, but they're Imperial Experts working with the common soldiers, sounds great to me. Footsoliders - Blob squads can really bog down and outnumber opponents with the right characters attached. Stay away from too many special weapons, they're useful but they cost the same as space marines for example on a T3 1W 5+ armour BS3 guy Chimeras - Hate em, I sold mine because all it did was die, and the guys inside died too. For a blob army it might be nice to shout orders out the hatch tho. FW Artillery - Sounds good to me, plus rare models throw opponents off guard (GO OGRYNS) Stormtroopers - HATE em. Well the look super cool, they're actually the reason I got back into the game. But deep strike (the best way to use them) is too random. Yes they drop down with 4 plasmas or metlas and do work sometimes, but sometimes they never make it to the table and are points wasted, in my opinion Menauver units - um... guard units are not the fastest. I use my scout sentenels to outflank, but everything else just sits in the deployment zone usually. Guard are not fast. Tanks - I love them, I use them, they are usually the last things alive in my games. Anyhoooooo, hope to see you at the Dice Dojo some time. Go guard!
