I got bored painting so much macragge blue, so I decided to do something different with my vanguard/assault marines. I was thinking of running them with RG tactics, so I wanted something that was somewhat similar to Ultras but had more of a shadowy feel. I also really like the look of Alpha Legion, so went for a bit of a metallic basecoat. So I essentially used a basecoat of leadbelcher, a bunch of thin layers of kantor blue, highlighted with a mix of kantor and white, and roughed up the armor with leadbelcher and a lighter silver from army painter. C&C? Also not sure what other colors to add to the mix, especially with the shoulder pads and jump packs. imgur.com/a/0Zcj1Sorry about the funky pictures. I tried to get them under different types of lighting, because there was really a huge contrast in the color based on the type of light. These certainly aren't my best models, I was just experimenting around with color schemes. |

anywho - the painting! Not too shabby for trying to replicate a metallic blue.
I will say, word to the wise, Forgeworld paints their metallic armors buy using a basecoat of runefang steel, and then glazing it whatever color the armor is supposed to be (blue for alpha, red for thousand sons, etc). So that would be your best route for replicating it - using standard layer paints over the top of metallics, unless in extreeeeemley thin layers, isn't going to provide the same effect.
You could also mix together blue + ironbreaker (for a better mid-tone metallic blue instead of a dark one) and use that to paint the figures too. Might give you a more even, consistent coverage.
But again, dark pictures aside, it looks like it came out decent. Nice work!

I was either gonna run a shadow force, a shadowstrike kill team, or just keep them in a 1st company veterans formation in my ultramarines gladius. I haven't painted my sternguard or landspeeder either at the moment. Thanks for the critique and advice. |

I was either gonna run a shadow force, a shadowstrike kill team, or just keep them in a 1st company veterans formation in my ultramarines gladius. I haven't painted my sternguard or landspeeder either at the moment. Thanks for the critique and advice. You could run then in a seperate formation, but you could not count it as part of a gladius. You are limited to one chapter tactic per detachment. |
