They can be a very powerful tool. The ability to deepstrike and ignore cover lets them clear the back field very well. Additionally, pretty much any loadout works on them. Melta/Multmelta or Flamers are the most common, but you can take Plasma and be effective as well.
The Skull Relic couples very well with the 1st company task force formation. The 1st company applies a -1 LD penalty to the opponent which makes it easier to get the Feel no Pain bonuses.

Thanks Will. I'll need to get a multimelta bit for them, but I'm pumped. Plus, the loadout that comes with the models is a little random, with a flamer and a plasma pistol/power ax. I think that 1st company trait requires at least 3 units within 12" though. How often can that be pulled off? I feel like the skull is pricey for 35 points.

Its often overlooked that the transports count in the 1st company formation, so two squads of sternguard in drop pods provide the leadership penalty. The skull is only really worth it on a full 10 man squad, because a squad of guys with a 3++ and a potential 2+ FNP (assuming you force a lot of moral tests) is pretty good. There a definitely better choices out there, but its pretty fun to play around with.
