I've been completely awestruck at how beautiful the forgeworld Horus Heresy books and models are, and I've been struggling not to sell off my chaos dwarfs in order to start up a Horus Heresy era-World Eaters army... Does anyone else have an interest in this? I've been told by some buds back in Ohio that the 30k Space Marine Legion list is actually pretty balanced for standard 40k, unlike some of the other forgeworld stuff (ie chaos dwarfs...whoops), but it'd still be fun to get a group together to progress on different legions together and to play the game in that time period. I can show the books to anyone who wants to peruse them (thanks back-to-school scanner/printer combo!) but I would encourage you to grab the actual copy, as its a glorious masterpiece of a trilogy (3rd book to be released this spring). I also hear that the next trilogy will center around the grudge between the Thousand Sons and the Space Wolves, and include the other 7 legions that weren't included in this first trilogy. These books also include rules for the primarchs of each legion - and special "chapter tacticts" that let each legion function in a unique way, foreshadowing their fall to chaos and the mechinations of the dark gods. Each individual primarch is a lord of war...so figure that out. I'm pretty sure Angron could literally tear apart a titan with his bear hands. 18 S10 attacks at Ap2...so yeah. Ridiculous.

Unfortunately no - although they are troops, you can't bring just siege breakers...you need to have 2 units of either tactical marines (10-20 in units size), assault marines (10-20 in unit size), or scouts (called infiltrators - and wear power armor) as your compulsory troops.
Then you can load up on Siege Breakers and Tactical Support squads (tac squads with ALL special weapons - so 10 meltas or 10 plasmas).
Also while not troops, all terminator units (except specialist units like World Eaters Red Butchers, Death Guard Grave Wardens, etc) are scoring.

I'm holding out for 30K Dark Angels, so maybe in another 2-3 years we'll see that happen and I can join the party. Like you, I absolutely love the stuff they're doing. I'm severely tempted by the AdMech stuff, but I actually have some 30K marines stockpiled from when I had disposable income to burn. One day though... One day.

RAVEN GUARD for forever for me. It's not like you can't use the models cross-systems or anything, especially if you're playing one of the founding legions. And that Corax model is going to be disgustingly amazing. I can't wait to do terrible things to it with a paintbrush and be forever ashamed.

Nick, could you give us a vague idea mechanics and scale wise how it works? What sort of sized army would be necessary etc., how the FOC works?

Terminators work extremely well in 30k - even though they're still elite, they all count as scoring. There are 2 types - standard terminators (2+/5++), that come standard with power fists and combi-bolters, and you can switch it out for the usual stuff (autocannons, heavy flamers, multi-melta, assault cannon, cyclone launcher, power weapons, chain fists, etc). They don't have stormshields (not invented yet), but you can still do thunder hammers and lightning claws and whatever.
Then there are the Catephractii terminators...2+/4++, 2 wounds each, STILL scoring. Ridiculous. You can take them in units of up to 10.
Basic mechanics are the same - but you have access to a lot of arcane weaponry that was lost during the dark age that followed the "death" of the emperor, so a lot of early-version grav weapons (graviton), melta, plasma, conversion beamers, etc. Also have access to "old school" armor, such as the unbelievable Spartan Assault Transport - 25 troop capacity, 4 TL lascannons, a heavy bolter, 14AV all around, and 5 hull points. Can be upgraded to ignore the extra D6 of melta as well.
The FOC is a little different - still have the 1HQ 2Troop mandatory, but can take up to 3 HQs and 4 Elites in a standard list - then the 6 Troops, 3 Fast, 3 Heavy per usual.
In general, an army will consist of a Praetor (Chapter Master level character), which are absolute beasts. Can give them termy/cataphractii armor, all kinds of cool weapons, and they get to pick a "legion trait", which dictates how the legion performs - like old school chapter rules, where you got a few bonuses but also a draw back. Then a "consul" hq character, which is a captain level character that can be upgraded to chaplain, apothecary, librarian, mech, master of signal, etc - and some cool new ones like the Moriat (a pistol wielding assassin).
Then you typically will have some contemptor dreadnaughts (come in "talons" = squadrons of 1-3), a unit or two of terminators, and then apothecaries (bought in units of up to 3, then attached to specific squads at the start of the game, and can be upgraded with different equipment to suit the squads needs). Then you have your troops - tactical squads of 10-20, which can only take either bolters or CCW/bolt pistol, assault marines of 10-20 which can have a special ccw per 5 marines (power weapons, melta pistols, etc) and have jump packs. Special weapon squads of 5-10 that all have the same special weapons (expensive but AMAZING).
Fast attack you have your jetbikes, regular bikes, land speeders, heavy weapon landspeeders, and the precursor to the storm raven, the storm eagle (or whatever its called) which is essentially the same thing.
Heavy support you have your tanks of all kinds - land raider variants, predator squadrons (thats right SQUADRONS for a single slot), heavy weapons teams of 5-10 that all (including the sarge) take the same heavy weapon, spartan assault tanks, the fire raptor gunship, and early baneblade equivalents that carry laser destroyers etc into battle. Also have the vindicators and whirlwinds (also in squadrons) that you have now, but every missile (including the heavy weapons teams) can be upgraded to have skyfire as well.
I've been fiddling with several 1850 lists, and so far the makeup is about like this for a standard game:
Praetor level character (for my world eaters, its Kharn before he was nuts)
6 cataphracti terminators with 2x power axes 2 apothecaries with artificer armor 1 contemptor dread with 2x assault cannons + skyfire
20 tactical marines with chain axes and bolt pistol 20 tactical marines with chain axes and bolt pistol
2 predators - autocannon, heavy bolters 1 Spartan assault tank (for the cataphractii + kharn)
comes out to 1850 on the nose
