Could we meet up at the Dojo and just play a game of dog fights? Yeah its called Star Wars Armada lol No but in all seriousness, the "minigame" doesn't even *use* the models - its purely just a few extra dice rolls to see if anybody's planes were destroyed before they made it to the battlefield. Oh. Well that's disappointing. But, I understand what you mean. (I've now read up on the current rumors). So, in a sense, it's almost like a more glorified system of reserve rolls, but only for fliers. Well, if there's anything 40k needs more of is dice rolls on random effect charts. I did see though a mention of putting your fliers into different formations. I wonder if that will be only in the "minigame" or whether they will be formations you employ physically on the tabletop and bonuses are conferred when you're in that formation?

Yeah it sounds like, in Death from the Skies games, you'll take a Strike Wing or whatever in addition to your army list - and it will include your flyers, in different formations (in the truest sense of the word - not 40k formations, but like flight pattern formations) that will affect how they behave in the dogfight phase. So for example, putting 2 fighters with your bomber will mean your bomber is safer, but you have less of a chance of getting the jump on an enemy bomber because your fighters are busy protecting vs hunting. Putting your fighters in a squadron means they are going to be better at intercepting other fighters, but it leaves your bombers (if any) susceptible to attack. Etc.

Any links or images saved? I'm looking too. It seems counter intuitive GW would do anything without pushing the model as the first and most essential thing but of course you could be right. So people could say they have 5 Flyers as long as they paid for it in their list and then go from there? Even if then they couldn't bring them onto the field, I could presumably just pay points for say 1 Fighter as a sort of dedicated AA (which mine is anyway) and it's sole purpose would be to neutralize that phase for the rest of the game?

Well no, because the models still roll for reserves and come on the table as usual - and play the game as usual - its just an extra bonus phase for the flyers to participate in *before* they arrive from reserves. So if all the flyers roll to come on on turn 1, you don't dogfight for the rest of the game.
So you can only "say" your brought X flyers in your army, if you also planned on them all being dead/forfeiting those points to your opponent because you don't actually have the models on the table at the end of the game, ie they get the victory points for them.
Its just a way for GW to say "hey guys, flyers can interact with the game even while they're in reserves - so even if they don't get to come in till turn 4, they're totally worth the money to buy and paint them I promise!"

Okay I take back the wait and see approach; that's hella stupid.

I'm honestly pretty excited about it, fixed wing craft have long been at a disadvantage in 40k. This may just give them a better chance at eliminating the enemies aircraft.

I agree. I like it. In fact, I'm a sucker and if they put out a Space Marine bomber (since I don't think there is one?) then I'd probably buy it sight unseen.

I'm sure they will add to it as well, as this stuff is pretty much in beta. I'm sure they will make it better once dark angels get their own "better" plane!

If rumors of the edition update in the summer are true then this is likely a test run for that. The same way that the previous skies of death was for 6th edition.

I'm just looking forward to the "Godzilla Phase" this Summer (our knights have to wrestle each other in reserves before coming in, only it happens in the middle of the table)

Okay I take back the wait and see approach; that's hella stupid. I think you should still give it a fair shake, and besides its an optional supplement that we don't have to play games with if we don't want to. As someone who owns multiple flyers for each army, I'm excited by the prospect of using them in new ways other than "came on first, so got shot down" or "came on second, shot down enemy flyer" or "interceptor is a thing so I'm dead".

Imperial Knight - Renegade. Yeah but this is a little different. See, you nominate one model in your army to enter the octagon (all tables now need octagons in the center: $79.99) Whoever loses the wrestling match, every unit in their army takes a Thunderblitz hit. Note* Tyranids take two Thunderblitz hits each.

Hmmm, can pieces of terrain be used as weapons? Such as folding chairs, baseball bats or cultists?
