I dont know if these are related or not, but rumor has it there is a stand alone boxed game coming out this summer, similar to the Imperial Knight Renegade box, which will feature two fliers going up against each other. Same idea meaning two high price kits that you can get at a serious discount. Anyway, if the rumor turns out to be true, it will definitely have my attention. Would be cool if these two fliers were in that kit. (Although I doubt they would put new releases into a discount kit right out of the gates.) And aerodynamics be damned, I think the Space Marine fliers are awesome! Storm Talon, Storm Raven... love them. And that picture you posted is really cool too... Looks like twin linked assault cannons, skyhammer missles, heavy bolter and an icarus storm cannon? Criminey, there is no way that thing would maintain lift firing all those guns. *sigh* My wallet is becoming a revolving door. In the white dwarf leaks, it doesn't say anything about heavy bolters - those things on the side look like sensors/lights in the close up WD pics, but man - 2x assault cannons, an icarus cannon, and skyhammer missiles is deadly. Can also swap out the icarus for a new type of Las weapon, that is a Heavy 2 S9 AP1 shot. Gonna kill some tanks man!

The closest to us, the viewer, I thought MIGHT be a heavy bolter, but also recognized it could be a stretch. Either way, I'm with you and that thing is awesome. Especially since I'm a fan of my Storm Talon anyway, having more options (options with more fire power!) is a great thing. AND, what I REALLY like is there isn't a clear glass canopy! Not that I dont like canopies, but this model will be way easier to paint, and no need to paint the cockpit! I'm in!

If they come as a boxed set thing, then I'd be down to split! That flier has my name on it!
I am guessing though that they'll release as stand alone kits. But if not, then I'm in.

Welp. What we *really* needed was a 5th phase anyway.

Here's the deal - there's so much vitriol on the internets already for the "5th phase" of the game; but it sounds like its going to be a ton of fun, brings a new layer of combat and meta to the game, and finally gives people something they've been asking for - ie, "let my flyers interact with the game more, other than fly around and shoot and be ignored".
Plus its not like its mandatory...until 8th at least lol
As someone with 3 razorwings and a voidraven, I approve this update.

Sorry Madison, I can't help you out. As someone with a Stormtalon and a Stormraven and who last night just bought two more Stormtalons and another Stormraven off Roger for cheap AND who's super interested in the new "interceptor"... I'm with Nick. I'm excited for this!
Two things I love in 40k above all else. Big Stompy Robots and Fliers.
Ooo... maybe with my purchase of the Imperial Knight Game (Renegade) and my new fliers, I can now run an all Stompy Robots and Fliers list! Keep an eye out folks! Coming to a Dojo table near you, Summer of 2016!

Nah I'm just kiddin witchu, variety is the spice of life even in the grim darkness of the future. Adding a phase is out of left field but I mean, no one should be surprised be that anymore. Plus...Crimson Death Formation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt_KfBaRWxs

"let my flyers interact with the game more, other than fly around and shoot and be ignored" We won't know until we actually play the new rules, but it sounds like this 'fifth phase' will segregate the fliers from the game even more. Personally, I was initially excited about the inclusion of the psychic phase since I was always forgetting about which powers I had and when to use them. Granted, the execution was a little off the mark. I don't see why a 'dogfight phase' or whatever it's called is even needed. Why do the fliers need to shoot in a separate shooting phase? Again, I'd like to try it out before I dismiss it. But from the outset, it sounds like an unnecessary addition to an already cumbersome ruleset.

Like you said, we will just have to wait and see. Flyers are one of my least favorite aspects of the game right now; this change could either remedy that by making it somehow better, or make it worse by simply putting more emphasis and value on them.
I have more leaked information that kind of explains it - there are a few roll offs to see who gets the jump, who is attacking/defending and then once that is decided, it's like a rock paper scissors game where you can shoot, stall, dodge, dive and then one comes out on top.
The way it sounds, both sides flyers I think come on in the same dogfight phase. Which does fix one of its more glaring current problems that the 2nd flyer to arrive kind of has the upper hand.
But as Nick said, it's always optional. Just like psychic and GC and SH.

From the WD leaks it sounds like the "dogfight phase" is something that we do before the flyers come in from reserves - meaning, they have something to do during turn 1 or later if you roll poorly for reserves. If either you or your opponent don't have flyers in reserve, you ignore it.
And D666 is right on - you have the intercept phase to determine who attacks who, then pick maneuvers to dodge, attack, stall, whatever to stay alive/kill the other flyers, then actually roll dice to attack and see what happens. But with the amount of flyers (ie, few and far between), and reliable reserve manipulation that is rampant, its going to add like 2 minutes to any given game on turn 1, and then everything comes in on turn 2 and bobs your uncle you're playing 40k again.
We'll have the full details in the next WD this Friday, so can decide if its something we like or dislike then, but I'm intrigued by it. Wonder if there will be a thing for FMCs within as well? Would love to see how my harpy/crone/tyrants deal with the phase.

I haven't been able to read up on this as much as you folks, but will dig into it later.
However, from what you're saying, I think it sounds intriguing. And, if it is cumbersome, then it sounds like it could be mutually ignored (be it accidentally or purposefully) like Night Fighting, Mysterious Objectives or Variable Game Length.
Anyway, I think it sounds neat and I'd be interested to try it. One question, does it look like there's enough meat here to be a stand alone mini game by itself? Like could we meet up at the Dojo and just play a game of dog fights?

Could we meet up at the Dojo and just play a game of dog fights? Yeah its called Star Wars Armada lol No but in all seriousness, the "minigame" doesn't even *use* the models - its purely just a few extra dice rolls to see if anybody's planes were destroyed before they made it to the battlefield.
