Hey folks,
Just a random question that I wanted some input on.
So, now that I'm going to the dojo (and other places) with my army, I've decided my big cheap plastic bin with tupperware isn't cutting it for transportation purposes. So, I'm looking into cases and other transportation options.
Anyway, just curious if folks could advise me what they use and/or recommend. Especially some of the cases out there are really pricey, which is fine, but I'd like to do some research rather than pulling the trigger blindly.
Any thoughts?
-Dave

A lot of people (myself included) use Battlefoam. They are quite expensive, but they do feature a lot of options, as well as the ability to make your own custom foam trays. The foam is a little more rigid, so there is the risk of paint getting scratched. Also the owner seems like a bit of a jackass. But I think their stuff is pretty nice. When I got into Warhammer I initially used KR Multicase, who are a little cheaper than Battlefoam but seem to have less options and customization. Their foam is softer though, which is nice. Their website is rather terrible though. I think both companies will be at Adepticon, so you could definitely check them out, and probably get a deal on stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions. Especially for the idea that both Battlefoam and KR Multicase might be in Adepticon. I was planning to go (not to play but to check it out) and I think I'll hold off to get a case until then. Like you said, might be able to get a deal on something!

I use a large toolbox from Home Depot. The brand is Husky and it's under $30. It fits my whole army.
However, it's important to note that this box is not at all designed to house models safely. I have never had an issue with it but I generally try to be very careful. I recommend it for the price, but I know there are a million better options out there for models specifically. Hope that helps somewhat.

Hey Madison,
I'm glad you chimed in since I know you were one of the folks using the tool box option, which is a route I am also exploring. Is your tool box foam lined? Or is it just hard plastic throughout? Also, do you do any sort of other protection for your models in your tool box?
It is impressive that you can fit all that eldar stuff, including your tanks, foot sloggers and wraithknight in the tool box...
Definitely I'm interested in exploring that route as well. Appreciate any additional insight.

No problem Asyrean.
As of right now, my toolbox is not lined with foam. It is just hard, plastic edges to all of the many compartments. It would seem to me, though, that foam (Especially custom cut foam) could easily fit in the main, large compartment.
I do use a form of packaging material, similar to bubble wrap, for the main compartment (Although for months, I did not and it was fine). It is 2 'trays' of air-filled bubble buffers that are cylinders and that fit perfectly into the main compartment. I don't really know how to describe them. Think bubble wrap, but the bubbles are HUGE and shaped like cylinders and there are only 8 of them per sheet.
I put my tanks on the bottom layer of the box, put the air-bubble tray on top of them, and then put the flyer/WK/jetbikes on top of that. I should clarify that while I can fit everything I own, it is VERY tight and if I were to expand my army, I would no longer be able to fit everything.
$30 is a pretty good deal, especially seeing as if you don't like it you can just bring it back to your nearest Home Depot so keep the receipt.

Perfect. I might look into that at least for a temporary solution. Especially since it looks like I might be re-matching Geoff for some Ultramarines vs Tau shooty goodness this Saturday at the Dojo.
Appreciate the advice!

If you're willing to put in the time, it's fairly cheap and easy to build your own foam trays.
Cardboard base and then normal cushion foam (purchasable at different thicknesses) works great for plastic models. For metals I just lined the bottom with 1/4" foam that I had lying around from something (You could certainly line everything with a 1/4" foam core and then glue the "proper" foam, but that adds significantly to thickness over the course of many trays).
This process took a while (although I was also building trays for 3-4000 points of DE, and 2-3000 of Nids), but allowed me to buy a cheap full-sized suitcase from Goodwill and build trays to fit... so now I can basically carry my entire DE collection (well, then I started converting more units...) at once. My Nids still require two cases if I'm taking the whole kit and caboodle, but can easily fit 2K with variable options.
You could save time if you were willing to cut versatility - cutting chunks of foam to fit around your vehicles at the bottom of a toolbox, and then a layer over to stack units safely would be a quick way to functionally carry quite a load. Both of my armies tend to be tentacle-y/spiky, so a little more difficult to work with in these terms.
All that aside, from a durability standpoint I've heard only good things about Battlefoam. I'm jealous of their hard shell, and wouldn't mind finding a way to add a little extra protection to my own case along those lines.

Thanks for the idea! I'm definitely willing to go the DIY route.
Where do you get the foam?

Asyrean
Hit me up this Tuesday, the lady friend had a great idea for transporting troops with magnets that has worked incredibly well for me

Hey doubleback, I won't be there this Tuesday unfortunately (stupid business trip)
But that's interesting you mention magnets. I read something online about using magnets, but I don't know what that means!

magnet base + sheet metal lined anything = profit. Especially in the world of all-plastic-armies, this can be a particularly nice way of keeping things in check.
As for my foam, I think I just went on Amazon? I built the sucker a couple of years ago, details are slightly fuzzy.

This is very interesting. I just went to Home Depot last night and got a tool box ($14.97) and it's relatively big, I think. So, will be (should be) big enough for any of my bigger models/vehicles/IK. I am a little disappointed that it didn't really have any trays in it. But whatever.
Anyway, the magnet idea is very interesting. I could see how that could really be a cheap way. I suppose even in tupperware, you could put down those adhesive magnets you mention and the guys would be stored standing up so they aren't bumping into each other.... then you'd have the modular design of the tupperware (ziplock cheap plastic storage things from the grocery store).... hmmm....
Thanks for the tips, gents!
