Seriously though; The new eldar codex is not balanced and I don't really look forward to playing against it. rather than trying to fix the whole system (wh41k....) just treat it as if it didn't occur. I'm interested to see what tournaments do to balance the cheese. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts when I get a full read but for now I'm at the 'throwing my hands up in the air in frustration' point.

You know, they more that I've heard people talk about it, aside from scatterbike spam it seems manageable. I'd have to play against newdar for sure, but the D doesn't rlly seem to hurt anything but Landraiders and MCs. In either case, grav has already been trashing both those units types for quite awhile now. Obviously the wraithknight is unkillable, but its not that big of a threat I think either. The guns aren't particularly devastating vs. anything but the aforementioned MCs and landraiders. The book has some broken parts (scatterbikes, wraightknight, questionably distort weapons) but I don't know if its the end times everyone has been heralding. The biggest concern I have is just the abuse of scatter lasers.

I was talking to Daniel Young about the new codex this afternoon and he sounded pretty excited about it. Not because of the new OP units, but because a lot of the stuff that was not very viable has been given new life with some of the new formation rules. It's not about the codex, it's about the dude making the list with the codex.

Very true, although everyone thinks about "that guy" when reading the worst any given book can do.
I'm likewise excited about the new aspects being... well... useable. Although Fire Dragons now "being BS5" makes Trueborn a bit sad in comparison... le sigh.
If this brings the rebirth of Biel Tann and Banshees, I'll be happy for that, at least.
Speaking of things, what's the deal with rangers/pathfinders? I have heard literally nothing on either of these... any changes?

No changes that I can see to the Rangers. Shrouded, move through cover, stealth, infiltrate, sniper rifles, etc.
They've also done away with the Exarch upgrade abilities and just given each Exarch something. The Scorpion has the Stalker special rule, whether you like it or not, Fire Dragons are Crack Shots.
The Serpent Shield, in addition to being 1 use per game, is expended once it is fired. That is, it doesn't regenerate on the next turn.
I'm torn on the Scatter Laser on the bikes: it's a heavy 4, so lots of shots, every bike gets to use one, but they can't charge in assault, they can run in the assault phase, but they lose the charge, hit & run and hammer of wrath, unless I'm reading that wrong. I'll echo that units that were ignored are now almost obligatory. The War Walkers, Vypers and Support Batteries, you unlock a bunch of cool rules by putting one of them in your formation. Plus a bunch of other stuff that I've not seen used.
I'm pretty excited, my wallet isn't since now I have to buy a bunch of models to flesh out some of my units that were either ignored or now I need a 3rd unit of a type (guardians, avengers).

Bikes are relentless so they can still charge after firing heavy weapons, can't they?
Also, to answer Dans question, no I'm not cool with playing the last Eldar codex instead. I paid good money for the new one, and for several aspect units, and intend to use them fully. This is also coming from the guy who brought a riptide to kill team, and brings a knight to every game he plays lol come on man.
The community reaction to the release bothers me a lot; you play the game and take it as a whole, no matter what GW throws at us. People run around with riptide spam, daemon summoning Eldar, adamantium lances left and right, Nids and Eldar allied to daemons, and a hundred other just ridiculous builds that the rest of the community took in stride...but get mad about codex Eldar seeming powerful on paper lol it drives me nuts.
The more I read the codex, the more I'm in love with MSU aspect armies, they're just so useful now! But I'm still going to bring a wraith knight from time to time, because it my favorite model in GWs range, and I hope my opponents show the same grace and poise with which we all took triptide, taudar in 6th, helldrake spam, knights, daemon summoning spam and everything else.

We can use the old codex only if we disallow allying Imperial Knights with Space Marine armies using White Scar Chapter tactics. Seems fair.

If you disallow the new Eldar you probably will need to follow all of the hard counters that will come in the future.
Hell, we're getting a new Imperial Knights book next week with 2 new Knights by the look of it. The meta is an ever evolving beast.
Adapt or die. Or something.
Eldar have always been dicks. The last tournament game I remember playing was against a serpent spam list and it was the first time I ever wanted to punch an opponent.

And no more bringing a Riptide to a Kill Team tournament

I must admit, the irony that this conversation/thread was initiated by the same gentleman that brought a riptide to a kill team tourney to be amusing or a warhound in an 1850 :-D I would have to agree with Mr Will. Distorts will have the most affect against MCs (Nids) and Big Tanks (Guard/Marines/Knights). I also know how easily wraithguard can die (I use to run 10 of them), if not looked after in the correct manner. Though one must realise the "thin end of the wedge", in that if we ignore one codex, what codices will we ignore next? What will that do with for the health and happiness of our group? Will new members want to play with us if we tell them we don't allow their new codex/army? If someone really doesn't like the idea of playing against X, just tell your would be match up, and they can ask someone else for a game. Instead, to keep the happy vibes of the group, just offer them some beer or a cup cake instead Personally I try to avoid Tau and I am lucky enough that one no in the group really plays that anymore. We are all aware of the 4 Chaos Gods, but there is a 5th larger Chaos God called Gamesworkshop. And we are all his play things. IT creates a rule set, and we play to its whims and desires, like good little deamonkin.

Yeah, as angry as the book can make us (which much of it is BS), there's still a lot of cool shit in there. They did fix Wave Serpents after all.
But as far as what makes for a shitty game, the problem isn't the book but the dude building the list.

Chris' banter always puts me in a good humor.
ps I just nabbed a sweet ebay deal to add some necrons to my collection (wraiths to finish off my canoptek formation and a triarch to start my judicator formation). Soon I'll be able to play my decurion too if everyone's bored of playing Eldar. That's just the nice friend I am.
