Also, does GW actually think that summoning is like a viable strategy in 8th edition? It seems like a big emphasis in this set. Those malific powers seem situational at best.

Well it took GW almost a week to completely fuck up Obliterators.
115 points per model. I can field a Deredeo for the cost of 2...or for a little more two Contemptors.

What was the pricing for 3 oblits before the new update? A squad of three Oblits before was 195. So for another 3 squad costs 150 more than before. That said, 2 of the new oblits can basically do the same thing as 3 of the old ones, so for comparable strength it would be 35 more than the old models.

That's true, but they have an extra wound and toughness (and I guess a close comabt attack but who really cares) It's still a little pricey but I don't think it's the end of the world. I'll still run them besides I like smaller foot prints or less models on the board.

I am likely going to run two 1-man squads. Their firepower isn't going to be popping Redemptors and heavy vehicles like before, but they are going to be somewhat tanky, hard to screen threats that can show up and blow up something.

I am hopeful that they will be buffed (I think some noticable buffs are coming to demons/demon engines) and they will be a bit more flexible. I have played with the idea of running 3 of them with a Nurgle mark and beside a Great Unclean One and a Feculent Gnarlemaw. It would be expensive but give huge mid board control and the GUO could bring back slain Obliterators

Unless that's all you want to do with your CP and you already play TS's it's situational at best. I'm not saying it's not worth taking into account, but it adds to their inherent cost in both unit tax (for those of us who don't normally run TS's to make a full detatchment)) and in whatever point value you give your CP. These will be fun units, and they look cool as hell, but I just don't see them ever being a competitive choice when there are other way more point efficient options. I see this as a missed opportunity if their goal was to make Chaos better overall (though at this point I think you can say that for everything in this box)

Yeah they are costy and can roll bad but in average they do a TON of damage that if your opponent doesn't screen correctly usually wins you the game (barring you don't wiff your entire next turn). I think they are usable and can still be competitive just got to change up your list. As for the new chaos box set...rules wise I'm only impressed with the physic powers (which in turn means the Master of possession). Otherwise, maybe the greater possessed isn't bad and the vemon crawler could have potential,nothing screamed (damn that's good) they look okay. As your said seems GW is making a push on their daemon engines and trying their damnest to get the summoning ability to work (because it doesn't most of the time). The space Marines on the other hand admittedly got so good stuff. Very good Marines
