I was able to get a ton of third edition models from when I was much younger (tons of Space Marine, Tyranid. Some Chaos and very little Tau) and 90% of them are terribly painted. I won't be stripping the paint from EVERYTHING as that would take forever, but I am gonna start with the pewter Hive Tyrant (the old 3rd ed model with the headcrest) and a Zoanthrope.
I have heard that Castrol Super Cleaner can deal with paint and that freezing models can weaken super glue (then crack it by wiggling it). I will probably just add details/highlights to the gaunts and genestealers to pretty them up.
I am mostly looking for pointers on dealing with old models that look like crap that I want to salvage (visually).
Thanks!

For stripping models, I've used LA's Totally Awesome, which you can get at Dollar Tree. After soaking for a day or two, you can scrub off most of the paint with a toothbrush. Some primer might remain in the cracks and crevices, but it's not a huge deal. It also weakens super glue bonds.

Yah, the Castrol Super Clean is awesome. I had very good luck with that when I wanted to strip some of my first attempts at painting. Similar to what Jesse said about the product he recommended. Just soak a day or two. I found that almost all the paint then came off just under a faucet of running water. It worked really well.
And ya, the freezer trick totally works as well. Especially if it's older glue.
Anyway, when painting the stripped models, just be very conscious of using thin coats. Like Jesse also said, you'll still have remnants of old paint in the recesses, so you want to be careful not to lose some of the detail.
Good luck!

Took your guys advice and turned him into a Tyranid Prime. Look pretty good and I can't wait to spread all this dakka everywhere! Attachments:

haha oh man, he somehow looks so much taller and yet simultaneously smaller than the warriors, that's pretty wild! He looks great, definitely worthy of being a prime!

The arms are definitely a little weird, but I kind of like it. I like the stats and buffs he gives even more

It's like ~65 Power/~1200 points all kitted out I think. I just got another Carnifex today that I have not put together yet.

Old One Eye joins my hive fleet! In honor of getting my second Carnifex, I went crazy on my old one with a dremel and made this dripping abomination. The other one is 100% magnetized. This one is stuck as One One Eye. Attachments:

Looks good. I like the scheme. Looks kinda similar to gorgon (or even tiamet), which would be a fun lesser-used fleet. If you're looking for any suggestions, you may want to try hitting the beige with some agrax earthshade in the recesses. GW shades really bring out the details in the models, and they've made my behemoth fleet super easy to paint.
