UPDATE: Just to prove that I did in fact paint the eyes of the last dread: And finished my second contemptor (complete with Fallout Hobbies transfers!): And the transfers on the other 2 dreads: I really feel like the transfers make a big difference - just that extra bit of detail to make them stand out as Thousand Sons dreadnoughts, and not just Blood Angels or Generic Red dreadnoughts. The fallout hobbies decal sheets are freaking awesome - and while they avoid IP infringement by not having specific thousand sons logos all over it, a lot of the decals are just random symbols, one of which IS the thousand son symbol, so I just cut around it until I had what I needed. I also like the white Eye of Ra/Wadjet on the dreads, since historically it was a symbol used to protect the dead in Egypt. As dreads are basically near-dead space marines entombed in giant metal sarcophagi, I loved that parallel. Plus it breaks up the red nicely, and will look great on the (nearly finished) deredeo dread I'm currently working on. Just need to get some lahmian medium/matt varnish to take down the "gloss" look of the decals under certain lighting. Will do that tonight while I'm up at the dojo! PS. I removed the doors from my Spartan, and soaked them in simple green. I'm stripping them, so I can re-paint them, and use the big decals that came on the sheets I ordered to decorate them instead of relying on hand-painted symbols like I had originally. Very excited!

Those decals really do complete the models. Must be a bit of a pain to cut out the Thousand Sons symbols but it works well. I was not familiar with Fallout Hobbies before so thank you for pointing them out. I like their not Dark Mechanicum sheet. I'll have to pick a few sheets up.

Hey Nick P(and anyone else who might have some tips) On your land raider that you posted on this thread, I really like the weathering. How did you do that? Air brush? As my next project, I'm working on a Rhino/Razorback for my UM's and I'm thinking about weathering it up a bit.

I actually used an old stiff drybrush to stipple the effect onto the model - first with Mournfang Brown, then with Gorthor Brown, then with Tallarn Sand, then with Ushabti bone. I added agrax wash over the mechanical pieces and in areas that I wanted the effect to be more subdued, and then drybrushed over the top again if I felt I went too far the other way.
I tried to focus the mud/sand/dust on areas that would naturally come in contact with the elements - so all of the tracks, and then just the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the model, plus any doors that would be regularly slamming open into the mud/dirt. Overall I actually think I went too far with it, and might redo it - I feel like the model looks too dirty for what the thousand sons would actually allow, and kind of obscures the highights and details I painted underneath (specifically the decals on the doors).

Awesome. Thanks for the explanation. I might look into this similarly for my Rhino, although much more subdued as this will be my first go around with weathering. Anyway, I like that you did it with a brush rather than an airbrush. This makes me feel more confident since I'm still trying to figure my airbrush out and so, have much less confidence with it at the moment.

I can give you a quick tutorial too next time we're at the dojo, its super super easy but its one of those things that people are hesitant to do because it might ruin their models. Its best to just take a deep breath and get stuck in, and figure it out as you go! The more random and hasty you do it, the more natural it will look, which is a bonus.
I did go back in last night with the mephiston red and evil sunz scarlet and paint over some of the weathering, just to bring the actual paint scheme back into focus for the models. Also redid some of the decals, now that I have the official 1k sons ones from forgeworld and don't have to use the 3rd party ones I found, which were just slightly off in terms of size/design (so as to avoid stepping on GWs IP).

When I'm home tonight you got it! I am much happier with the overall look and feel of the dreads and tanks now, and after I finish up my Necrons for the dojo tourney next month, I'll be tackling the infantry portion of my 1k sons for the 30k track at adepticon.
PS if anyone else is going to adepticon, I am still looking for takers to split a hotel room. I'm not spending $600 to stay there all weekend alone, but will gladly spend $200 (or less if we get more people!).

So I've been mostly focused on my Necrons over the last few weeks with the recent Dojo tournament, but have been putting my attention the past week on 2 main projects - 1, getting my Thousand Sons legion ready for adepticon (have about 30 infantry to paint for that, and about 80 infantry to paint overall!), and 2, doing some terrain projects for my home setup to clear my mind and act as a palette cleanser. With the new thousand sons rules, I'm lucky in that I don't need to add a ton of units to my current collection - my 20 terminators will work well as Sekhmet with just a couple quick weapon swaps, and my 80 other infantry of various builds will work well as tacticals and veterans as well as heavy support etc. where needed (yay magnets!). But there was one unit that was just too cool not to add, and since the FW models A) aren't out till probably april/may and B) aren't all that swag, I kitbashed my own. Here's the start to my 10 man Khenetai Blade Occult squad - dudes with Brotherhood of Pyskers 1 (biomancy waaaaaaat....?) and TWO force swords each that get better as the squad grows: These were made using the new 40k rubric marine legs, torsos, and shoulder pads with MKIV backpacks from Betrayal at Calth, vanguard veteran arms (with a few leftover Calth and Prospero arms for variation) and sword hands from various space marine kits I've amassed bits for over the years, complete with the last of my tomb kings kopesh bits (and a kopesh lookin' wood elf blade which is DOPE). Still awaiting the heads from ebay, I'm giving them all the same head from the tactical upgrade kit from FW, namely this one: I've got 5 more bodies build, with arms and shoulders attached - but am awaiting backpack bits from Dex, and additional sword hands from CJ, and 1 more order of kopesh bits from eBay to finish them off. This will allow me to field a full 10 man squad, which will dish out 60 WS6 force attacks on the charge. Nice.
I don't love some of the hands that I ended up using for the conversions above due to excitement and impatience, so will likely pop them off once I get my hands on the hands from CJ and redo them all more uniformly. As it stands, some of the hands were bolter hands etc. that I converted to look like they were holding a blade, and it just doesn't have the same impact as using actual blade-holding hands and just replacing the, well, blade. I've also been building some ruins as a palette cleanser - the old fashioned way, with card, foamcore, a sharp blade, and PVA + pins! I have a game on Wednesday vs Eric to try out my Ynarri list, will be picking up the triumvirate then, so will have to add that to my painting bench as well. I hope to have a test sylvaneth tree revenant done this week, as well as a test Thousand Son legionnaire, terminator, and Khenetai Blade guy so I can see what direction I want to go with them for the main scheme now that my tanks/dreads and characters are all done by the end of the week or at least over the weekend. All this "not going out because your wife is pregnant" stuff is turning into quite a bit of hobby time and painting time. #getpreggers #paintallthethings

Hey on that terrain - should I make a larger square base for the ruins? In 7th, there's no real thing as area terrain anymore, but I still think they just look nicer with actual bases. Thoughts?
Also thought about putting rubble piles, smaller ruined walls, etc. on the edges of the bases so that any unit that was on the base would get some kind of cover save, re-creating the idea of area terrain which I think is useful for the game.
Also what else should I make - I've got 2 more similar ruins on deck, another 3 story guy and a 2 story guy, though I plan to make them 3-sided ruins instead of 2-sided ruins, so the floors are more sturdy and can hold whole units. These guys above can hold small units fine by putting them on multiple levels, or a single character (like an assassin) on the top floor, but are pretty useless for things like 10 man squads.
